Brainwash, cult, subliminal messages, manipulation, Hitler, Jones, Madoff: What's the difference?
Brainwash: "A process in which a group or individual systematically uses unethically manipulative methods to persuade others to conform to the wishes of the manipulator(s), often to the detriment of the person being manipulated."
I don’t know what you think about Adolf Hitler, Jim Jones or Bernie Madoff but I can guess two things with certainty.
One you probably despise them and...
two you never would do anything like they did.
A psychologist by the name of Stanley Milgram conducted several astonishing experiments. In a lab, a scientist, dressed in a white coat (you know the one's doctors wear), ordered people like you and me to progressively give stronger electrical shock to learners in another room when told to do so if they answered a question incorrectly.
Ouch ! They never were given a shock but they sure as hell screamed loudly to be heard by the innocent teacher (Oups nowadays teachers don't punish students, don't they?).
What happened?
Most people followed orders.
Recall in the 1962 movie, The Manchurian Candidate, an American soldier, Sergeant Raymond Shaw, is subconsciously programmed by seeing the “Queen of Diamonds” playing card while playing solitaire to commit murder on command. He obeys orders which he then forgets. It's all a big plot to overthrow the American government. That's all I'll say because you have to read the book or see the movie.
Now here are a few interesting questions...
Could you follow orders to kill and burn innocent people without thinking?
Could you be brainwashed like 900 people who commited suicide by drinking Kool-Aid my favorite drink when I was young (ain't dead yet) in Jonestown?
Could you be seduced by a financial planner to invest your money into a pyramid scheme?
Do you remember Patty Hearst and Elizabeth Smart?
Where they responsible for their actions? And was it their fault?
In fact, can you be robbed of your free will?
What's the difference between someone who is brainwashed and someone who is not?
Can we use programming for good instead of evil purposes?
Finally how can you resist authority?
Your only method of self-defense is to arm yourself with the knowledge to understand and counter-attack manipulators.
Let me get a bit personal here.
I believe my sister is manipulated by a guru and she has lost contact with reality. Her unconscious mind hangs on to irrational beliefs fed to her by an unscrupulous cult leader. I am helping her to deprogram these beliefs by taking a stand.
She knows it and she still can be saved but believe me it's a challenge to reprogram her at the unconscious level to clear all her negative beliefs and behaviors.
