The story of Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Gretzky's Highlight Reels

Wayne Gretzky

Do you agree that Wayne Gretzky is the best hockey player ever?

In fact, he holds practically every record in the National Hockey League.

When he was younger, he played hockey on a homemade rink in the backyard of his home.

His father would water the backyard to make a rink.

Most interestingly Wayne's father, Walter Gretzky, took 8 mm (a long time ago ;-) movies of Wayne when he was skating and scoring goals.

Mr. Gretzky also took homemade movies of Wayne when he was scoring goals as a youngster in competition.

Today these homemade movies are available on a video, Above & Beyond, dedicated to Wayne's prestigious career.

Now could it be that Wayne Gretzky imprinted his mind with his dad's homemade movies?

And even if Wayne does not recall those past memories, he can still replay his own video to remember his early success experiences.

Surely his power of mental focus must have improved daily with the use of these homemade videos.

In fact, this is what he has to say in his autobiography:

  • “Probably my fondest memory is picking up the Stanley Cup the first time. As a kid, I watched all the great players pick up that Cup. To this day, I can still see Jean Béliveau of the Canadiens picking it up and holding it over his head. I must have rehearsed how I would do it ten thousand times. And when it came true on that May night in 1984, it was like an electric jolt up my spine.” - Wayne Gretzky

Of course, these thoughts have many scientific results to back them up as you are progressively discovering.

But don't you agree that this mental movie seems to be a common thread that bonds many champions in sports.

  • “Not only does the use of peak performance music videotapes enhance performance but it also does wonders to demystify mental skills training and establishing good rapport between players.” – Wayne Halliwell, Ph.D. Sport Psychologist

Stanley cup winner and coach of the Montréal Canadiens hockey team in 1986, Jean Perron and Wayne Halliwell, a sports psychologist, produced a video self-modeling tape for Stéphane Richer.

The self-modeling tape included segments of his best offensive, defensive and power play performances. Combined with visualization techniques, it has helped Stéphane reach the top of his game.

In 1995, Stéphane was again a winner of the Stanley Cup but this time as member of the New Jersey Devils.

Similarly Jacques Demers put together with his coaching staff a 90-minute video of the Canadiens' best performances to prepare his players for the Stanley Cup playoffs. John LeClair since then traded to the Philadelphia Flyers chose the music.

What happened during the playoffs? A miracle on ice. The Montréal Canadiens went on to win the Stanley Cup and establish a record 11 overtime victories. Coincidence?

Scoring goals is a science and I have created an eBook that explains how to score goals like a sniper. I encourage all of you #hockey coaches, dads, and moms to read the eBook to teach your players like Wayne Gretzky's dad.
